Hold Fast by Blue Balliett

On a cold winter day in Chicago, Early's father disappeared, and now she, her mother and her brother have been forced to flee their apartment and join the ranks of the homeless--and it is up to Early to hold her family together and solve the mystery surrounding her father. (http://www.deschuteslibrary.org)

  1. I loved "Chasing Vermeer" so I was really excited to read this book. Mysteries are fun to read, especially if they are not too predictable . . . this one was NOT super predictable so I enjoyed it. One thing that I still keep thinking about is how the narrator (Early) calls her parents by their first names . . . their family members' first names are part of a catchy phrase they use to represent themselves, but I think that it might confuse kids. So . . . be warned, Early calls her parents by their first names: Summer & Dash.
